Rory treks along Wayfarer Lane at a slow pace that could be mistaken for leisurely. Without the glow of city lights or streetlamps of any kind, the darkness surrounding him is eerily complete, the night alive with movement that his ears cannot help but perceive. He sniffs and wipes at his nose, which is beginning to run just a bit. After blinking time or two, it occurs to him that despite the darkness, he can still see just fine. Everything is faded to black and white, but he doesn't find his vision hindered at all. He shoves his hands in his pockets as he approaches the building and train tracks.
Lettie laid on one of the old benches that sat outside the train station. The small woman just a blip in the scene, almost mistakable for a lump of something left behind. Her black clothing was torn in places and as dirty as could be. She barely moved, just the subtle rise and fall of her chest, resting there. The fuzzy auburn ears atop her head twitching to new sounds every now and then. The noises of this space familiar after a day hanging around the station.
Rory rubs at the bridge of his nose with his right hand. His mouth is dry, and he runs his tongue along his lips a little, already craving another cigarette. He hasn't touched the Mayfairs since sharing one with "Emma"--a decision he might live to regret, since there weren't any shops about selling smokes. There wasn't any anything about, just a watchtower that looked like something out of one of Eden's romantasy books. The night air is nice; not too hot, not too cold. As he passes the bench, a subtle sound brushes his eardrums. Rory stops and listens. There are plenty of insects out there, but none of those sound like a human breathing. He takes a sharper look around and eventually spies the heap of Lettie sprawled across the bench. He bites on the bottom lip a little and just watches, not at all put off by her appearance.
Lettie breathed in shallow, soft breaths, just laying there on the old rickety bench. She wasn't very tall, and fit on the space with relative ease. Her feet were off the edge of it, resting on a worn out crate as a foot prop. The world was a cruel and fickle mistress. Choosing when to wipe someone from existence and send their soul into purgatory to rot away. At least that was her current thought process after waking up in the middle of an unknown place full of abandoned things and not another soul to be found. It was footsteps that got her attention. That was new, not a bug or the wing making things creak. Slowly she turned her head to look in the direction for Rory. Tri-colored locks of black and red with a white streak falling into dirty freckled face. Blue-and-green mismatched eyes stared at him. A ghost? Her lynx ears twitched as she tried to place this specter from her past come to haunt her. That is how that tale went, she thought.
Rory looks, well, nothing like anyone Lettie has ever seen before, besides being human. His eyes are dark and deep-set, unnaturally piercing in this complete darkness. His face looks ethereal with its sharp cheekbones, soulful dark eyes, and the messy, shoulder-length brown hair that flops down around his face, finally dry at last. He's wearing a light brown jacket, a T-shirt not tucked into his jeans, and a pair of worn-out sneakers. All of the clothing has seen better days. He pulls his hands out of his pockets and holds them palm-out towards Lettie. "Hey kid." He says, mistaking her small size and appearance for that of a child.
Lettie slowly sat up on the bench as the specter started to talk to her from a distance, pulling his hands out in surrender. As she sat, that oversized hole sporting black sweater of hers fell off one shoulder and revealing the day old deep gash that ran the length of her collarbone. She copied him, holding small hands up in the same gesture, too long sleeves quickly falling to hide the dirty hands. "Not a kid, Speckles." Slowly she went from sitting to standing on tired legs. "I don't know which of the nine lives you are from, who are you?" She demanded in an ask of him. She truly thought he was a ghost from a past life of hers come to seek his vengeance on her, even if he held hands up to appear harmless.
Rory observes Lettie with subtle wariness, peering at her through a short curtain of messy hair. Despite his best efforts, sometimes it still falls in front of his eyes. That gash looks nasty; how did she get it? He doesn't want to tangle with whatever did it. The cat ears don't fall off her head when she moves. This is the second person to demand information from him, but this one is less naturally intimidating than Emma was. "My name's Rory," he replies neutrally, cautiously even. "What's yours?"
Lettie slowly lowers her hands to let her arms fall back to her sides. The clothing on her dwarfed her already small size, giving her more of the almost childlike look to her, though there was no children in these lands. Her tangle hair was falling into her face as much as his choppy brown locks were in his. He spoke and one ear atop her head twitched, the other staying still. They were truly attached to the top of her head. She was giving him a skeptical look when he asked her name. If he was a ghost from the past, wouldn't he know it already? "Mildred," she offered without skipping a beat. "Where did you come from, Speckles Rory?" Another demanded question.
Rory fixes the girl with a long look. "Bullshit. Only grandmas are named Mildred these days. What's it really? Hannah? Jessica? Lauren? Diana?" He shot out the last one, a reference to the late Princess of Wales. He steps back from Lettie and scratches at his neck again, chewing on his frustration at a second demanding personality. Was this his fate, to be trapped in an empty area with demanding birds? "From London. What about you? Are you from that Solol place too?"
Lettie blinked, as he snapped at her over the name she gave him, "How do you know I'm not a grandma?" That look on her face was questioning what in the heck a grandma was though. "I come from an old school family, its Mildred." It wasn't. Not even close, but she spoke it with pure conviction to be true. Her brows furrowed, "London? What in ever loving lying bullshit is that." She'd never heard of such a town before. Now he must be trying to pull her leg. "I'm from the forests." If he knew of Solol, he'd know London wasn't on any map that also had that city.
Rory crosses his arm. "Grannies are old. You're not old." He chews on the inside of his cheek while regarding her. "London, United Kingdom. It's not a lie, Not-Mildred. It's the capitol city of England."
Lettie folded her arms over her chest, "Werelynx live for a long time and age very slowly, I could very well be old." The phrasing gave away that she wasn't old enough to be a grandma. It also shared what she was, as if the ears did not make it obvious that human wasn't it. Both brows raised, "You hit yer noggin' recently. No such place as London, Utitty Kittydom...or Eagleland."
Rory rubs the bridge of his nose. "United Kingdom. It's a place on Earth, where there aren't any werelynx. I haven't hit my head at all. Do you turn into a lynx when the full moon rises?"
Lettie laughs a loud. The sound was interesting, almost mixed with a growling purr to it. "You are funny, Speckles. Telling me I cannot be a Mildred because I am not old while you are making up cities!" She snorted, "Earth? More non-sense. No, I can shift into a lynx anytime I want. I'm a werefeline not a werewolf. The moon doesn't affect my shifting like it does them smelly wolves."
Rory closes his eyes briefly. Maybe he could duplicate himself a supply of cigarettes. He was going to need one after much more of this. "Right then," he replies with a shrug, and starts walking towards the station.
Lettie sits back down on the old bench outside the entrance to the station as he starts to walk. She must be seeing things or hit her own head, making up people now that didn't know about werelynx and make believe cities.
Rory eventually fades into the darkness as he walks away.
